Herbert Grant Newstead was born on 4 April 1914, the son of George Graham and Mary Newstead. He was educated Haberdashers' Aske's School and joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its London Cavendish Square branch in December 1931. He later transferred to Harley Street branch, and then, in February 1937, to Finsbury Square. Outside work he was a member of the bank's staff sports club.

 

Newstead was mobilised at the outbreak of war in 1939, having joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve some time earlier. He qualified as an observer and was posted to the Middle East in July 1940. He later served in Greece, and in January 1941 was transferred to the Far East. 

 

Flight Sergeant Newstead was killed in air operations over the island of Sumatra on 12 February 1942. He was 27 years old.

 

Herbert Newstead is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
