Percy William Newell was born in March, Cambridgeshire on 27 May 1911. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank as a messenger at its London Lothbury office in July 1939. 

 

In March 1941 Newell was called up to serve in the Royal Navy. Ordinary Seaman Newell was killed in action when the ship on which he was serving, HMS Airedale, was sunk during Operation Vigorous in the Mediterranean on 15 June 1942. He was 31 years old and left a widow, Marjorie. His obituary in the bank's staff magazine recalled that although he was only with the bank for a short time, 'he became very popular owing to his kindly and lovable disposition.'
