John Trevor Owen was born on 9 October 1918, the son of Robert and Nellie Owen. He was educated at Friar's School, Bangor, where he joined the University Officers' Training Corps.

 

In May 1935 Owen joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Holyhead branch. He moved to Portmadoc branch in 1937 and to Pwllheli in 1938. Shortly after that move he was promoted to clerk. Also in 1938, Owen became a Territorial soldier in the Welsh Fusiliers whilst still working for the bank. On the outbreak of war he was embodied and served in Northern Ireland.

 

He soon transferred to the Royal Air Force, flying over Norway and Germany. He flew in 19 operational flights, including the first 1000 bomber raid on Cologne. 

 

On 29 March 1944 Flight Lieutenant John Owen was killed in the UK as the result of a flying accident. He was 25 years old.
