Donald Moncrieff Pattison was born on 17 November 1919, the son of Godfrey Herbert Pattison and his wife. He was educated at Wellington School, Somerset. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its London office in May 1938 and moved to the bank's London Horseferry Road branch in 1939.

 

In February 1940 Pattison left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Tank Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps. By 1944 he held the rank of Lieutenant and was serving in Normandy. He was killed in action there on 29 June 1944. He was 24 years old and left a widow, Mona, whom he had married in December 1942.
