Herbert Orlando Peel was born on 27 September 1913, the son of George and Eliza Ellen Peel. He spoke Welsh. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Wrexham branch in April 1932. He was promoted to clerk at Rhyl branch in 1939.

 

In April 1940 Peel left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 3 September 1942 he was reported missing as part of the crew of a Lancaster bomber which was lost without trace over enemy territory. Almost a year later, in August 1943, he was officially presumed to have died on that day. Pilot Officer Peel was 28 years old and left a widow, Doris, whom he had married in 1940. Their child, a son, was born several months after his death.
