James Eric Potts was born on 1 December 1921, the son of James Ellwood Potts and Evelyn Lillian Potts. He was educated at Shoreham College from 1935 to 1939, and played for the school's rugby team. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its Hove Church Road branch in May 1940. 

 

He later left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was posted to North Africa in December 1942 and took part in the Tunisian, Sicilian and Italian campaigns. He was killed on 7 July 1943. He was 21 years old.
