John Gorringe Pollard was born in West Ham, London, on 30 July 1922, the son of Arthur Stanley Pollard, an accountant, and his wife Lillian. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its London West End office in October 1939. 

 

He later left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Flight Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed on 21 February 1944 when his plane was shot down off the coast of the Netherlands. He was 21 years old.

 

John Pollard is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London St James & Piccadilly branch.
