John Smith Porter was born in 1921, the son of Charles Porter, a grocer, and his wife Annie. He worked for National Bank of Scotland at its Largo branch in Fife.

 

During the Second World War Porter left the bank to serve in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. After training as a navigator in Canada he returned to England to begin active service. On the night of 22-23 June 1943 he was part of the four-man crew of a Stirling bomber which took off from RAF West Wickham (Wratting Common), Suffolk, on a mission over Germany. Their plane was intercepted and shot down by a night fighter, killing all on board. Sergeant Porter was 22 years old.
