Murray Pennington

Bank: Westminster Bank

Place of work: London Wandsworth branch

Died: 12 June 1943

Murray Pennington was born on 19 November 1922, the son of Henry Edward Pennington and his wife Catherine Emily Pennington. Henry worked for Westminster Bank, and in April 1939 Murray followed in his father's footsteps, joining the staff of the bank's London Wandsworth branch.

In May 1941 he left the bank to go on war service, joining the Fleet Air Arm. He served with Coastal Command and in the Mediterranean area and was serving in Tunisia when he died on 12 June 1943. Sub-Lieutenant Pennington was 20 years old. A colleague later recalled, 'his work in the bank was of great promise, while his sunny nature endeared him alike to colleagues and customers. He will be sadly missed.'

Murray Pennington is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Putney branch.
