Peter Quine

Bank: National Provincial Bank

Place of work: Derby branch

Died: 25 February 1944

Peter John Quine was born on 8 December 1918, the son of William and Daisy Quine. He was educated at Burton on Trent Grammar School and Ilkeston County Secondary School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Basford branch in October 1935. He was promoted to junior clerk a few months later and to clerk in January 1938. He moved to Derby branch in April 1938. He was the third generation of his family to serve in the bank: his grandfather, Robert William 'Pa' Quine had worked at Lincoln branch and his father, William Howell Quine was manager of Ilkeston branch. His elder sister, Joan Mary Quine, also worked for the bank, at its Wrexham branch.

Quine was a territorial soldier, and just before the outbreak of war in September 1939 he was called to active service with his regiment, the Royal Artillery. Bombardier Quine served in England for a year before being posted to Malta where he remained for three and a half years during the whole of the siege of the island. Early in 1944 he went to North Africa for an Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU) selection board and in the words of his Company Officer he 'passed with flying colours'. He was about to return to England when he died as a result of an accident in Algeria on 25 February 1944. He was 25 years old.
