Charles Rose

Charles Gordon Rose was born in Wigan on 14 August 1908, the son of Arthur George Rose, a colliery salesman, and his wife Elizabeth. In 1924 he went to work for Williams Deacon's Bank, and from 1931 he was based at its Wigan branch. 

 

In September 1941 Rose left the bank to go on war service, becoming an Ordinary Seaman in the Royal Navy. On 5 February 1942 the ship on which he was serving, HMS Arbutus, was hit and sunk by a U-boat in the North Atlantic. 43 of the ship's 85 crew were killed, including Ordinary Seaman Rose. He was 33 years old and left a widow, Myra May, whom he had married in 1935.

 

Charles Rose is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Hardman Boulevard office, Manchester.
