Frederick Ralph Rigby was born on 2 January 1918, the son of Edward and Margaret Helen Rigby. He was educated at Ermysted's Grammar School, Skipton. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Kingston upon Thames branch in November 1935 before quickly moving to head office Security Department. He was promoted to junior clerk in February 1936 and to clerk in April 1938, before moving to Millbank branch later that month. Outside work he was an active member of the bank's rugby team. 

 

As a Territorial, he was mobilised for service with the Royal Marines just before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. Lieutenant Rigby was killed in Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944. He was 26 years old and left a widow, Peggy, whom he had married in 1942.
