Peter Rumsey

Peter Frederick Rumsey was born on 14 April 1918, the son of Henry Hunn Rumsey and his wife Lilian. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Derby Normanton Road branch in September 1935, and in January the following year was transferred to Leicester office. A colleague there later recalled that 'his imperturbable and happy nature endeared him to all.'

 

In December 1939 he left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Lance Corporal in the Seaforth Highlanders. He served in Madagascar, North Africa, Sicily and mainland Italy, where he was killed in action on 18 January 1944. He was 25 years old.

 

Peter Rumsey is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Leicester Granby Street branch.
