Thomas John Ruff, known to his bank colleagues as 'Scruffy', was born on 1 December 1920, the son of Frederick Thomas and Annie Elizabeth Ruff. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Bromley branch in October 1938. A colleague later recalled that there 'he became a popular member of the staff, was liked - in fact, loved - by all, and his ability and charming personality would have assured for him a successful career.'

 

In September 1941 he left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, becoming a pilot. Sergeant Ruff was killed in a flying accident during a training flight on 4 February 1943. He was 22 years old.
