William McLean Ritchie was born in Latheron, Caithness in 1918, the son of David and Amelia Jane Ritchie. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its Turriff branch. 

 

During the Second World War Ritchie left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, becoming a wireless operator and air gunner. Sergeant Ritchie was killed in action over Germany on 12 June 1941. He was 22 years old.
