William Roberts

William Merrick Roberts was born on 24 January 1918, the son of John and Mary Elizabeth Roberts. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in September 1937, and from December 1939 worked at Liverpool Cressington branch. Outside work he was an enthusiastic and talented footballer and cricketer, and a bank colleague later recalled, 'he carried his qualities of sportsmanship with him into every sphere of his life.'

 

In June 1940 he left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Sergeant (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner) in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed while flying in the service of Coastal Command on 11 June 1941. He was 23 years old.
