Adrian John Somerville-Woodiwis was born on 28 June 1916, the son of Adrian and Gwladys Ann Somerville-Woodiwis. He was educated at St Chad's College, Wolverhampton. His father worked for National Provincial Bank as chief cashier at its Wolverhampton branch, and after leaving school, Adrian followed in his father’s footsteps, starting as a probationer at the bank’s Cannock branch in January 1934. He was promoted to junior clerk in July 1934 and moved to Bristol Old Bank branch in January 1935. He was promoted to clerk in July 1936 and moved to Swindon branch in August 1938. 

 

In July 1940 he left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Somerville-Woodiwis was killed on 1 September 1941 when his aircraft was shot down by a night fighter during a raid on Cologne, crashing near Duerne, Holland. He was 24 years old.
