Alfred George Slade was born on 11 December 1912, the son of Frederick and Laura Slade. He was educated at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Crediton. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Taunton branch in April 1931. He was promoted to junior clerk a few months later and to clerk in July 1933. In July 1937 he moved to London City office. 

 

Slade was a territorial soldier in the Queen's Westminsters, King's Royal Rifle Corps, and at the outbreak of war in September 1939 he was called to active service. He was commissioned into the 12th (Airborne) Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. On 24 March 1945 his battalion was deployed by glider as part of Operation Varsity and succeeded in its task of capturing Hamminkeln, Germany. Lieutenant Slade was reported missing and later presumed to have been killed in that operation on 24 March 1945. He was 32 years old. He left a widow, Thelma, whom he had married in 1939, and a baby daughter.
