Denis Louis Stebbins was born in Bath on 25 May 1909, the son of Alfred Henry and Gertrude Elizabeth Stebbins. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Bristol branch in September 1926, and from 1938 was the clerk in charge of the branch's sub-office at Pill. He also took an active part in community life in the district.

 

In September 1941 Stebbins left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Sergeant in the Royal Corps of Signals. He was posted to India where, on 30 June 1944, he died of malaria. He was 35 years old. He left a seven-year-old son and a widow, Margaret, who herself had worked for five years at Westminster Bank's Bristol branch and whom he had married in 1935.
