Derek Sheldon was born on 13 March 1920 and joined the staff of Westminster Bank in August 1937, working in its head office Income Tax Department. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club.

 

At the beginning of the Second World War Sheldon left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flight Sergeant Sheldon went on to take part in over 60 raids over enemy territory, but was reported missing - later presumed to have been killed - after a raid over Essen on 1 May 1943. He was 23 years old.
