Douglas Horwood Stonham was born on 12 August 1918, the son of Arthur Douglas and Lilian Mary Stonham. He was educated at Sidcup County School for Boys. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank in November 1935 as a probationer at London Tottenham Court Road branch. He was promoted to junior clerk a few months later and to clerk in April 1938. He moved to Bloomsbury Square branch in October 1938.

 

He was mobilised with the Royal Army Service Corps just before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. Lieutenant Stonham was killed in a motor accident whilst on active service in Kenya on 20 January 1942. He was 23 years old.
