Eric Lewis Sharp was born on 18 May 1920, the son of Thomas and Mabel Sharp. He was educated at Workington County Technical and Secondary School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Workington branch in September 1937. He was promoted to junior clerk a few months later. In January 1939 he moved to Liverpool Aintree branch and was promoted to clerk a year later.

 

In 1940 he left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He undertook part of his training in Canada where he obtained his commission and was posted to Bomber Command. On the night of 7/8 May 1944, 58 Avro Lancasters and 4 De Havilland Mosquitos of No.5 Group, Bomber Command undertook an attack on the explosive works and ammunition depot at Salbris, France. Flying Officer Sharp was navigator on board one of seven Lancasters that were lost during the raid. He was killed on 8 May 1944 when his aircraft crashed at Loreaux, near Romorantin-Lanthenay. He was 23 years old.
