George Stewart

Bank: National Provincial Bank

Place of work: March branch

Died: 23 February 1943

George Bowman Stewart was born on 6 April 1910, the son of George and Mary Stewart. He was educated at Drax Grammar School, near Selby. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank in May 1927 as a probationer at Nottingham Smiths Bank branch. He was promoted to junior clerk in August 1927 and to clerk in October 1929. In February 1933 he moved to March branch.

In January 1941 he left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He had obtained his 'A' licence at a civilian flying school before the war and qualified as Sergeant Pilot after completing his training in America. Sergeant Stewart was reported missing after a flying accident during operational training in the UK and was presumed to have been killed on 23 February 1943. He was 32 years old and left a widow and two young daughters.

His colleagues later remembered him in the bank’s staff magazine: 'Of a sporting and generous character, Stewart will be sadly missed by his many friends both in and out of the bank's service.'
