Gerald Chaloner Smith was born on 25 May 1912, the son of Cuthbert and Mildred Smith. He was educated at South Lodge School, Lowestoft and Haileybury College, Hertford. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Hunstanton branch in February 1930. He was promoted to junior clerk a few months later and to clerk in July 1932. He moved to the bank's Bradford Commercial Bank branch in April 1934, to Bournemouth Westbourne branch in April 1936 and to Doncaster branch in January 1938.

 

In youth Smith was a member of his school's cadet force, and he later became a territorial solder, receiving his commission in March 1939. He was called up for full time service in the Royal Artillery at the outbreak of war in September 19139. Captain Smith died on 16 September 1941 in a prisoner of war camp in Poland. He was 29 years old.
