Gilbert William Slack was born on 19 April 1919, the son of Rose and George William Slack. He was educated at Grimes College, Manchester, and joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Ancoats branch in November 1937. He moved to Wilmslow branch in 1938.

 

In July 1940 Slack left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Pilot Slack was killed in a flying accident on 22 September 1942. He was 23 years old.
