Gordon Alan Smith was born on 1 November 1918, the only son of Thomas and Eliza Smith. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Westhoughton branch in November 1936. A bank colleague later recalled him as 'a very likeable and cheerful fellow, quiet and unassuming, and a very promising colleague.'

 

In December 1939 Smith left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, eventually being promoted to Sergeant and qualifying as a wireless operator air gunner. He was killed on a bombing raid over enemy territory on 2 August 1941. He was 22 years old.
