Ian Graham Stewart was born on 21 March 1921, the son of Robert and Janet Stewart. He was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Totnes where he excelled as both a scholar and as an athlete. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Torquay branch in June 1939 and was promoted to junior clerk a few months later. 

 

In June 1941 he left the bank to go on war service, joining the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. After training in Scotland he was commissioned into the Indian Army and was gazetted to the 2nd Punjab Regiment. He volunteered for the Wingate Force and served with the V Force in Burma for almost 12 months. Lieutenant Stewart was killed on 7/8 July 1944 in Burma. He was 21 years old.
