John James Bruce Sherlock was born on 28 December 1915, the son of James Bruce and Lydia Frances Sherlock. He joined the staff of Manchester & Liverpool County Bank as a junior at its London Waterloo Place branch in March 1927 and was later promoted to clerk at that branch. In 1935 County Bank, as it was then known, was taken over by District Bank and Sherlock became an employee of that bank. In 1937 he moved to London Victoria Street branch.

 

In August 1940 Sherlock left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Navy. Writer Sherlock was killed as part of the crew of HMS Galatea, sunk by a German submarine off the coast of Alexandria on 15 December 1941. He was 25 years old and left a widow, Phyllis.
