John Andrew Allan Somerville was born in Largo, Fife, in 1918, the son of Andrew Allan Somerville and his wife Elizabeth Orford Somerville. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its Thornton branch. 

 

During the Second World War Somerville left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 25 August 1941 he was part of the four-man crew of a Hampden which took off from RAF Scampton on a mission to Dusseldorf. The plane collided with another Hampden in mid-air near Lincoln, killing all eight men. Sergeant Somerville was 23 years old.
