Patrick William Shanahan was born on 7 February 1919, the son of William and Catherine Shanahan. He was educated at St Joseph's School, Burwash, Sussex and St Ignatius College, South Tottenham. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Overseas branch, London in February 1936. He was promoted to junior clerk a few months later and to clerk in July 1938. 

 

In October 1939 he left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). Lance Corporal Shanahan was killed at Enfidaville, Tunisia on 9 May 1943. He was 24 years old.
