Frederick Leonard Tidball was born on 29 May 1921, the son of Evelyn and Frederick John Tidball. He had a twin brother, Walter. He was educated at Tiverton Middle School.

 

In October 1939 Tidball joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a temporary clerk at its Dulverton branch. He was promoted to junior clerk in January 1940. His twin, Walter, joined the staff of Midland Bank at around the same time. 

 

In March 1941 Tidball left his job at the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He trained as a pilot in South Africa and on his return to the UK was posted to Bomber Command. His twin brother also joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 8 November 1942 Sergeant Pilot Frederick Tidball was reported missing, presumed killed, when the Halifax bomber in which he was flying failed to return from an operation over Germany. He was 21 years old. His brother, Walter, was killed in action just over 6 months later, in July 1943.
