Geoffrey Chapman Toes was born on 23 December 1922, the son of William and Gertrude Toes. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its York branch in March 1940. 

 

He later left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Flight Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 9 February 1945 he was air bomber on the crew of a Stirling bomber on a support mission for the Danish resistance. The plane crashed into water in bad weather, killing all six men on board, including Flight Sergeant Toes. He was 22 years old.
