Godfrey Dinsdale Tebbutt was born on 18 October 1913, the son of Annie and Samuel Godfrey Tebbutt. He was educated at Montpelier Preparatory School, Paignton and King Edward VI Grammar School, Totnes.

 

In March 1932 Tebbutt joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Torquay branch. He was promoted to clerk in July 1934 and in January 1939 he moved to Okehampton branch.

 

In July 1940 Tebbutt left his job at the bank to join the armed forces, eventually fighting in the Royal Tank Regiment. On 20 December 1944 Serjeant Godfrey Tebbutt was killed in action in Greece. He was 31 years old.
