Herbert Tattersall was born on 1 May 1913, the son of Herbert and Annie Tattersall. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Preston branch in October 1932.

 

In March 1941 Tattersall left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flight Sergeant Tattersall was killed on 13 March 1943 as part of the crew of a Whitley bomber which crashed into the hill Ben Hutig, Scotland, while on convoy escort duty. He was 29 years old and left a widow, Mary Eileen, whom he had married in 1939.
