Hilary Muriel Tongue was born on 30 September 1895, the daughter of Robert and Kate Tongue. She joined the temporary staff of Glyn, Mills & Co in June 1916 and by 1935 was working in the bank's head office in Lombard Street, London. Her colleagues later remembered 'her happy ways and her perpetual cheerfulness which has endeared her to so many'.

 

On 16 July 1944 a flying bomb hit Granville Road, North London where Hilda Tongue lived. Miss Tongue was killed along with 14 other people and another 25 were seriously injured. She was 48 years old.
