Hubert Harold Tomlin was born on 20 October 1904, the son of Emily and Harold Norman Tomlin. He was educated at Dover County School.

 

In June 1923 Tomlin joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Canterbury branch. He was promoted to clerk in December 1925. He moved to Bristol Old Bank branch in 1926. In 1929 he married Kathleen and they lived together in Bristol. A year later he moved to Bristol Knowle branch. In 1938 he moved to Bristol Bedminster branch. 

 

During the Second World War Tomlin volunteered with the Auxiliary Fire Service in Bristol whilst continuing to work for the bank. On 3 January 1941 Hubert Tomlin was killed during the longest air-raid of the Bristol Blitz. He was 36 years old and left his widow, Kathleen.
