Jeffrey Turner was born on 16 December 1919, the son of Ethel and James Frederick Turner. He was educated at Rochdale Municipal High School for Boys.

 

In January 1938 Turner joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Kettering branch. He was promoted to junior clerk in April 1938 and moved to Manchester branch in August 1939. Also in 1939 he joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, whilst continuing to work for the bank.

 

Less than a month after his move to Manchester branch, on the outbreak of war, Turner was called up for active service. For the first year of the war he was attached to Bomber Command in the UK, and he was then transferred to the Middle East. On 23 September 1941 Pilot Officer Jeffrey Turner was killed in action in the Middle East. He was 21 years old and left his widow, Barbara, whom he had married just a few months earlier.
