Rupert Drury Thompson was born on 31 May 1912, the son of Drury Freeman Thompson and Ida Marguerite Thompson. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank. In 1938 he married Kathleen, who also worked for National Provincial Bank. 

 

By 1939 he had joined the bank's Auxiliary Fire Service based in the bank's London Bishopsgate office building. During the Second World War Thompson left his job at the bank's London City Office to join the Royal Navy. On 7 February 1943 Lieutenant Rupert Thompson was killed when the landing craft on which he was serving was torpedoed by a German submarine off the coast of Algeria. He was 30 years old and left his widow, Kathleen.
