Donald Unsworth

Donald Unsworth was born on 31 January 1921. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank at its Preston branch in January 1938, and in September 1939 transferred to St Annes on Sea branch. 

 

In July 1940 Unsworth left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, training as a wireless operator. On 27 February 1942 Sergeant Unsworth was part of the five-man crew of a Whitley bomber which took off from RAF Leeming on a mission to Wilhelmshaven, Germany. Their plane was shot down by a German fighter, killing all on board. Sergeant Unsworth was 21 years old. His obituary in the bank's staff magazine noted, 'he personified all that is finest in modern youth. To have known him has been a valued privilege.'
