Arthur Norman Page Witting was born on 21 November 1910, the son of Arthur and Bessie Mabel Witting. He was educated at St Dunstan's College, Catford.

 

In October 1928 Witting joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its London Princes Street office. He was promoted to clerk in January 1931 and worked at branches in London including Waterloo Station and Orchard Street Corner. In October 1936 he moved to Streatham Hill branch.  

 

In August 1940 Witting left his job at the bank to join the Royal Air Force. A year later, on 19 August 1941, Sergeant Arthur Witting was aboard SS Aguila, a British troopship on the way to Gibraltar. The convoy came under U-boat attack and SS Aguila was sunk with the loss of all lives. Sergeant Witting was 30 years old.
