Cyril Pitman Williams was born on 20 September 1909, the son of the Reverend Frederick Job Williams, a Wesleyan minister, and Linda Condon Williams. He was educated at Ermelo Government School and Rustenberg High School, both in South Africa.

 

In March 1928 Williams joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Aylesbury branch. He moved to West Malling branch in 1929 and was promoted to clerk in 1930. He moved to Sheffield High Street branch in 1935 and a year later he married his fiancée Zena in Aylesbury. A year after that he moved to Sheffield Infirmary Road branch. 

 

On the outbreak of war Williams left his job at the bank to go on military service. By 1941 he was a Lance Bombardier in the Royal Artillery. On 7 November 1941 Lance Bombardier Cyril Williams was killed in action in the Middle East. He was 32 years old and left his widow, Zena, and their young son.
