Douglas Roy Whitehead was born on 16 August 1922, the son of Douglas and Minnie Whitehead. He joined the staff of District Bank at its Warrington branch in November 1938. He moved to Northwich branch in July 1940.

 

In February 1942 Whitehead left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. By 1945 he was a Sub-Lieutenant serving on HMS Formidable, an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. He was killed on active service on 17 April 1945. He was 22 years old.
