Eric Winter was born on 6 June 1916, the son of Jack and Gertrude Winter. He was educated at De La Salle College, Manchester. After leaving school he worked for some months as a clerk at S&W Berisford Ltd, a Manchester grocer's and pharmacy.

 

In April 1933 Winter joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Burslem office. In September 1934 he moved to Manchester Stretford Road branch and a year later he was promoted to clerk and moved to the bank's main Manchester branch. 

 

On the outbreak of war Winter left his job at the bank to join the Royal Artillery. He was posted to East Asia and attached to the Royal Indian Artillery. Serjeant Eric Winter was reported missing after the fall of Singapore in February 1942. There was no news of him until 1946, when it was confirmed that he had died on 13 February 1942. He was 25 years old and left his widow, Joan, whom he had married in 1940.
