George Campbell Wallace was born in 1909, the son of John Wallace, an engineer, and his wife Margaret. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in July 1926. He was also a member of the bank’s staff sports club.

 

In July 1941 Wallace left his job at the bank’s London Shoreditch branch to join the Royal Navy. By 1943 he was serving as a Coder on HMS Resolution. He died of cancer on a hospital ship on 22 March 1943 in Mombasa, Kenya, three days before his 34th birthday. He left a widow, Amelia, whom he had married in 1935.

 

George Wallace is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Liverpool Street Station branch.
