George Arthur Woollam was born on 1 May 1924, the son of Henry and Jane Woollam. He joined the staff of District Bank as a temporary junior clerk at its Burslem branch in March 1941.

In July 1942 Woollam left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Marines Commando. Lieutenant Woollam was killed in an accident in Scotland on 7 June 1945. He was 21 years old.
