Hugh Mostyn James Williams was born on 27 March 1916. He was educated at Cardigan School where he excelled at sports and was selected for the Welsh schoolboy international rugby trials.

 

In September 1933 Williams joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its Newcastle Emlyn branch. He was promoted to clerk in 1936 and moved to Halifax branch in April 1939. A few months later he married his fiancée Eileen in Halifax.

 

A year later, in April 1940, Williams left his job at the bank to join the Royal Artillery, soon gaining a commission. He was posted to the Middle East, where he served in Iraq and Iran until early 1944, when he joined the 8th Army in Italy. On 8 September 1944 Lieutenant Hugh Williams was killed in the severe fighting on the Gothic Line at Rimini. He was 28 years old and left his widow, Eileen.
