John Frederick Wardle was born in 1911, the eldest son of the Reverend Frederick Wardle and his wife Dorothy. Educated at Worksop College, he joined the staff of Westminster Bank in June 1928, on his 17th birthday. Outside work he was a member of both Worksop and Retford hockey clubs, Worksop badminton club and the Yorkshire Ramblers.

 

In July 1940 Wardle left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Trooper in the Royal Tank Regiment. He was killed in action in North Africa on 2 January 1942. He was 31 years old.

 

John Wardle is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Worksop branch.
