John Sandford Wrathall was born on 8 February 1916, the son of Marion and William Foster Wrathall. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior clerk at its Lancaster branch in June 1934. He was promoted to clerk at Settle branch in 1939 and moved back to Lancaster branch in May 1940. 

 

In October 1940 Wrathall left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Lieutenant Wrathall was killed on 27 March 1943 as part of the crew of the aircraft carrier HMS Dasher, which sank in the Firth of Clyde following a major internal explosion. He was 27 years old and left a widow, Margaret, whom he had married in 1942.
