Roger Howard Wilkinson was born on 25 November 1922, the son of Cecil Howard and Margaret Gore Wilkinson. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its Kingston-on-Thames branch in 1940. 

 

On 28 November 1941, three days after his 19th birthday, Wilkinson left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, training as a navigator. Flying Officer Wilkinson was killed on 21 April 1944, as the navigator of a two-man plane on an operational flight over Germany. He was 21 years old.
