Roy Desmond Woods was born in Rangoon in 1921, the son of Ernest and Mabel Woods. He was educated at Somerville School and Berkhamsted School and joined the staff of Westminster Bank at Birkenhead branch in July 1939.

 

During the Second World War Woods left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, training as a pilot. Flying Officer Woods was killed on 22 January 1943 during a low-level attack over Belgium. He was 21 years old and left a widow, Pamela, whom he had married in 1941.
